Lake Daylesford
Ducks, coffee and paddle boats
The Daylesford Lake is man made having been originally gold diggings followed by extensive Chinese Market Gardens with their own village, Joss House and store. In 1883 it was discussed to turn the area into a lake and construction finally began in 1927.
A favorite treat here (other than sipping coffee on the lake) is the ducks and swans. They could be described as more demanding than friendly. I remember lying on the edge of the lake with my partner some years ago when two ducks walked over my legs to try and take my lunch (lucky they chose the right person or they could have ended up as lunch themselves). Invest in a loaf of bread from the town and go and make their day.
Daylesford Lake has the Boatshed Cafe, a children's playground, undercover barbeque with seating and paddleboats on the weekends.
Not recommended for swimming due to very cold currents it is a pleasure (albeit steep in one part) to walk around again and again. Views of the natural bush can be seen from one side while the other gives a view of the township beyond.
Around halfway you can venture down to the mineral water pumps and take a refreshing drink. Probably an acquired taste but well worth a try.
A walk around the lake takes approximately half an hour (an extra 15 minutes if you want to venture on the other side of the road bridge). Not great for the disabled due to uneven ground. Tends to be frequent unleashed dogs so don't wear your Sunday Best.
In days gone by the Daylesford Lake was lit up all the way around the path so a refreshing evening stroll could be enjoyed. A swimming area was provided with changing rooms - and it was a popular swimming destination. But those times have sadly passed. |
