Yoga is for everyone.  There are many, many styles of yoga on offer in Australia.  They vary from very traditional asanas to yoga incorporating dance, pilates and more.  Some styles are vigourous, some require a lot of physical strength, some do only meditation, and some offer only the basic movements.  Try a few yoga classes until you find one that resonates with you and really does feel right.

The history of yoga is obscure and heavily debated.  Although the time frame varies many estimates are that yoga is around 5,000 years old.  The debate centres around ancient carvings and other historical factors that may or may not be yoga postures.  Regardless of this yoga is mentioned in the vedic shastras ( Hindu religious texts) going back 4,000 years. Yoga is mentioned in the Upanishads (which are principal texts of the Vedanta, considered the culmination of all Vedic philosophy). Teachings found in the Vedas are called Vedic Yoga.   More on the history of Yoga

Hatha yoga is one of the most popular and well known forms of yoga around the world especially in western countries. Hatha Yoga comes from the system of yoga, spiritual practices that provide tools for personal growth.  Hatha yoga is mostly comprised of three of the eight limbs of classical yoga.  Integrating the use of physical postures called asanas, giving attention to and control of the energy and patterns of the breath called pranayama, and deep internal mental focus and concentration called Dharana.     More on Hatha Yoga

The Roots of Hatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga is the yoga that most people know as simply, “yoga.” Practiced for emotional and physical health and wellness, Hatha Yoga focuses on both the purification of the mind and the body, aiming to pave a path to vitality and wholeness.

Yoga Postures and Yoga Asanas
Many yoga styles have been derived from classical yoga, and are designed to suit various preferences. Most of the different yoga positions practiced fall into one of two categories: meditative or therapeutic. There are literally hundreds of yoga basic positions or yoga asanas. All of the yoga positions are designed to provide benefits for both the mind and the body.

Is Yoga For You?
Yoga is the most popular and fast growing exercise trend of all. Over the last few years this form has really taken off and more and more people are choosing it among all other forms of exercise. Yoga is healthy and it is fun. Your entire body will get a total workout and a great stretch when you use yoga each day.

Yoga History 101
When you practice yoga, it is, of course, not necessary to have a full understanding of yoga history in order to fully benefit from your practice. A brief understanding of the history behind yoga, however, may increase your spiritual practice and inspire you to find out more about the tradition behind the discipline.
