If you haven't heard of Pilates classes you must have had your head buried in the sand.  Pliates has been around for many decades, in fact it goes back to WW2, but in recent times the exercise program has exploded.  There are very few programs that offer such controlled and isolated muscle strengthening.  Pilates can be done with either specialised equipment or with mat exercises.

You don't have to be an athlete to do Pilates but the exercises are very popular with them.  Pilates works by combining breathing techniques with particular stretching and strengthening exercises. It is a method of exercise which focuses on improving the body's core by making the body more flexible and stronger.  In combination with various Pilates machines, an individual can go through systematic moves, whilst holding their torsos in place and moving their limbs in different directions. This movement challenges the individual's balance, strength and flexibility.

The benefits of Pilates are well known with many Pilates students report that by doing regular classes, their bodies are toner, well balanced and stronger. After a Pilates workout, individuals can feel the difference in their abs, backs and legs. Other known benefits to Pilates are weight loss, increased energy levels and a general sense of well being. As Pilates is gentle and controlled it is an ideal workout for athletes recovering from injury and older people who may not have the capacity to do strenuous exercise, or pregnant women. Pilates can be done stand alone or incorporated into other sports.

Fitness And Pilates
Pilates involves a system of movement coupled with therapeutic exercise. This particular fitness program took Joseph H. Pilates over 60 years to perfect. In addition to helping people look better by toning and firming the body, Pilates makes people feel better. Through precision toning and bringing balance to muscles at the joint area, this fitness method stimulates circulation by using muscular flexibility, proper musculoskeletal alignment, and range of motion.
