Self Defence gives twice the value
Most people involved with martial arts will never get into a fight in the real world, but we live in a world where it is possibly to be attacked for no good reason.  The great advantage of a martial art is the fact you are getting fitter and stronger while learning to defend yourself. Self defence requires physical strength, endurance, cardio, co-ordination and balance.

A Martial Art or Self Defence allows you to get fit and stay healthy while learning to defend yourself. Increased flexibility, sharpened reflexes, lean muscles and self confidence with a group of like minded people. Many styles are traditional or have developed from traditional styles - most modern styles an amalgam of traditional techniques. Whether traditional or not, choose a style that suits your needs - with so many to choose you will find one.

There is so many styles of Martial Art and Self Defence we could not list them all.  Some come from ancient traditions such as Daito Ryu whereas others are a modern approach such as Krav Maga.   Here are some of the main styles.

Jujutsu
Jujutsu is considered to mean  a "gentle, yielding, or compliant art".  It is a traditional Japanese martial art whose focus is to yield to the force provided by an opponent's attack in order to use counter techniques from the resultant attack. Literally use the opponents force.  There are many ryu (styles) of the art which leads to a diversity of approaches. Jujutsu ryu may encompass many techniques including Throwing, trapping, locking, holding down, grappling, gouging, biting, disengagements, strikes, and kicks.     More on Jujutsu

Karate
Probably the most popular martial art in the world with more styles and interpretations than any other form of self defence.  Karate literally means "open hand".  Karate uses little grappling but is a striking art using punches, kicks, knee and elbow strikes and open handed techniques. Karate practiotioners are called karateka.  There are many, many styles to choose from with one of the most famous being Kyokushin Karate founded by Mas Oyama.    More on Karate
