Massage Glossary

Welcome to the Find to Click Massage Glossary.
The following terms are aimed to give the public and hopefully some therapists a list of massage and bodywork terms. The names given to techniques and tests can vary but we have attempted to use the most common terms. Enjoy.

Effleurage
Long flowing strokes are used with the hands (firm or light) using lubricant to encourage venous and lymphatic return. Traditionally towards the heart. Swedish Massage Term.

Petrissage
A term from Swedish Massage also known as kneading. The tissue is squeezed between the fingers and the thumb. A rotating action is performed as one hand moves away the other moves in. It can involve kneading, rolling and picking up the skin and muscles. Swedish Massage Term.

Tapotement
A rhythmic percussion, most frequently administered with the edge of the palm or the heel of the hand. It is primarily used as a stimulating stroke and to break up adheasions. Swedish Massage Term.
