Remedial massage one of the clinical styles of massage.  To do it properly a thorough knowledge of western medical sciences is necessary.  Remedial massage is interested in the why and how of an injury or complaint.  Did you injure yourself or has it been slowly progressing to this stage?  In what way does your complaint restrict movement?

The first thing is to take a thorough history including past injuries, illness and complaints.  It will include the age (the older you are has quite an influence on your complaint), sex (male or female of course), recent injuries.

Next is a thorough investigation of the complaint.  The region of pain or restriction will be visually examined for bruising, discoloration, heat or swelling.  Alignment such as one shoulder higher than the other will be noted.  Palpation can find tender spots or areas of abnormality. Movement of the area can help to determine whether the problem is muscle or ligament related.

Special tests for nerve entrapment or specific tears can be carried out.  If necessary you may be referred on for an x-ray, blood test or scan.

Once the problem has been determined a regime of treatments including massage and stretching can be introduced.  Exercises may be given to do at home to strengthen or relax muscle groups.

Hopefully you will be on the way to recovery.
