Aikido is a technique that incorporates moves that are more defensive than offensive. In fact, it seeks not to injure but to forestall or stop a person. This is possibly why there is rarely a weapon employed in the sport. The martial arts is comprised mostly of movements and systems. Still, there are some, who are already advanced, that enter weapons training. Weapons that are utilized in aikido are the tanto, the wooden jo and the bokken. Often, techniques in taking weapons from opponents and keeping the weapon practitioners are applying are taught.

A basic precept of Aikido is that the physically weak can overcome the strong, however does that mean there is no place for physical strength in practise? For one thing, we all can accept that we are not masters by any stretch of the imagination and so we will have to resort to strength during the early phases of our training. In fact, enlightenment is quite a ways off for most of us and we can expect that we will continue to use strength until we reach a ripe age of 60 or so.
